    UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS MBA PROGRAM

With such a large and physically distributed student body, the UT MBA program had a big logistics challenge: how to procure and distribute a diverse set of course materials to a highly distributed, mobile and digitally savvy student body.

Like many MBA programs around the country, the University of Texas MBA program in Austin offers not only a full-time MBA program but also offers courses to working professionals through their Executive MBA program located in Austin, Houston, Dallas and Mexico City. With such a large and physically distributed student body, the UT MBA program had a big logistics challenge: how to procure and distribute a diverse set of course materials to a highly distributed, mobile and digitally savvy student body.

To distribute course materials, they had to purchase and physically distribute (ship) printed textbooks, course materials and case studies. This meant ordering, storing, and distributing multiple textbooks and case studies to each remote classroom and then physically handing the materials out to each student. This process took hours and hours of cumbersome receiving, sorting, packing and delivering every quarter. Additionally, if the professor was using online course materials, an access code would need to be distributed and a tutorial session provided to all students on how to access each one of the different online course platforms—another time-consuming and, often, confusing process.

The staff of the UT MBA program knew there had to be a better way—that's when they came across Amazon's Whispercast, a free online tool for procurement and distribution of digital content. Adoption of Whispercast enabled the UT MBA program to quickly and effectively procure and distribute eTextbooks and digital course materials from a central location and deliver directly to their students' devices, including tablets, laptops, PCs and smartphones. Professors worked with UT administrators to purchase the digital content or convert their own original content for distribution.

Students have been thrilled with the Whispercast experience—course materials simply show up in their Kindle Reading App and can be read from most any device.

Students have been thrilled with the Whispercast experience—course materials simply show up in their Kindle Reading App and can be read from most any device. Their digital content is easy to find and accessible both online and offline. Plus, students are able to take advantage of study features included in the Kindle Reading App, such as Multi-Color Highlighting, Notebook, Flash Cards, X-Ray for Textbooks, Swift Navigation and Kindle's innovative text-to-speech technology. Professors love the large catalog of educational content available through Amazon, plus they can have their own materials (papers, articles, assignments and quizzes) distributed along with the eTextbooks.

Since its implementation of Whispercast, the UT MBA program has used the tool to cover its Evening, Executive, Dallas, Houston and Mexico City MBA programs.

CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD STUDENTS ENGAGE WITH TABLETS

Dr. Linda Macias, Associate Superintendent, Curriculum and Instruction and Accountability for Cypress Fairbanks ISD, knew that students tended to be highly engaged when reading on a tablet. The question was, how do you get tablets and digital books into the hands of a large number of students easily and cost effectively?

Dr. Linda Macias, Associate Superintendent, Curriculum and Instruction and Accountability for Cypress Fairbanks ISD, knew that students tended to be highly engaged when reading on a tablet. To encourage this type of positive engagement, Dr. Macias wanted to provide students across the district access to tablets and digital books especially those students who didn’t necessarily have access to technology. Making the transition to a digital learning experience is a top priority. However, as Cypress Fairbanks ISD is the 3rd largest school district in Texas and the 22nd largest in the country–the question was, how do you get tablets and digital books into the hands of a large number of students easily and cost effectively?

Dr. Macias reached out to Becky Cook, CFISD’s Instructional Technology Director, and asked her to investigate options. Ultimately, they decided to purchase Amazon’s Fire tablets because they were powerful yet inexpensive. Cook’s team setup a loan program so Cypress Fairbanks' students could check out the tablets and take them home.

Amazon did it right—they made it manageable for a district the size of ours to transition to digital learning.

Dr. Macias also wanted an easy solution to purchase and distribute digital books and apps to the tablets—a process that could be repeatable and scalable. CFISD evaluated and tested several options for mobile device management, direct distribution and content management services. The one option that met all the needs was Amazon’s Whispercast tool. "Amazon did it right—they made it manageable for a district the size of ours to transition to digital learning," said Cook. "The Fire tablet deployment has been the only one that has gone smoothly—it was a piece of cake to get the devices out to students, distribute digital books and have students actually use them," said Cook.

Today, CFISD uses over 1,200 Fire tablets. Content procurement and distribution is efficient and easy for the designated in-school curriculum technologists, and students are more engaged with reading when using the tablets. Due to the success of the deployment, CFISD is planning to expand their device and digital content program in the coming years.

    CORPORATE TRAINING WITH KINDLE FIRE

ROI Training delivers custom training solutions to employees via Whispercast.

Offering a curriculum of more than 150 instructor-led technology and management courses, ROI Training was looking for a new way to deliver its cutting edge content to thousands of attendees, many of whom are new hires at large corporations and government agencies. They were also exploring ways to reduce the costs and time required to print and ship course materials to their students around the world. To do so, ROI decided to provide Kindle Fire tablets loaded with their curriculum for each of their students. They also let students keep the device after the course is over. ROI soon found that not only was the cost of a Kindle Fire comparable to printing and shipping materials, but it also changed the way students engaged with the course content.

“We are constantly looking for ways to enhance the learning experience for our customers. It was so much fun handing out the devices to an incoming training group; the look in their eyes was priceless when they realized they wouldn’t be handed textbooks or manuals, but Kindle Fires. There was a buzz in the room, and it continued for days. The overwhelming response from the students is that they love learning with the Kindle Fire, and their managers like that their employees are more likely to do follow-up research and review their training materials when they are presented with a tablet rather than a textbook,” says Caroline Brant, Director of Learning Services.

The use of Kindle Fire tablets had an even bigger impact for their multi-week programs. When ROI introduced the Kindle Fire tablets in their classes, they immediately noticed students carrying around the devices when working in smaller break out groups and referring to their course materials. Not only were course materials more portable, but students’ use of the Kindle Fire enhanced their overall learning experience.

Whispercast has been a crucial tool for our business. We deliver training programs all over the world, and Whispercast is like having an extra administrator on staff.

To distribute content to their Kindle Fire tablets, ROI used Whispercast, Amazon’s online tool to manage Kindle devices and distribute content. ROI uploaded their PDF documents into Whispercast and were able to control which groups of students received which content. They also used Whispercast to procure and distribute apps they found in the Amazon Appstore for Android to all of their students to provide them with an even richer reading experience.

Brant continues, “Whispercast has been a crucial tool for our business. We deliver training programs all over the world, and Whispercast is like having an extra administrator on staff. Setting up Amazon accounts, registering devices and creating user groups can be done with a few clicks of a mouse, and pushing content and apps is simple and straightforward. We can push new training materials on demand, which our clients love. The Kindles can now be ordered and shipped straight to the client, and once received we can send weeks of training materials in a matter of seconds!”

    LITERACY IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD

Worldreader uses Whispercast to deliver thousands of books to students in sub-Saharan Africa.

David Risher was inspired by a volunteer experience at an orphanage in Ecuador, where he was shown their library: a padlocked room of books with no key. Understanding the profound power of books to change people’s lives, including his own, Risher founded Worldreader, a non-profit organization whose mission is to make digital books available to the developing world, so that people can be empowered to improve their lives and those of their community.

To deliver books across sub-Saharan Africa, Worldreader partnered with Amazon to use Whispercast, a new tool that enables organizations to distribute eBooks to Kindle devices from anywhere in the world with Internet access.

Funded by its donors and partners, Worldreader has put books in the hands of over one thousand students in Africa. According to Worldreader, “Digital technology sharply lowers the cost and complexity of delivering books everywhere. As we make reading easier and less expensive, the world will read more.” Worldreader was able to deliver purchased and donated books to its students for free using Whispercast technology.

Worldreader has now sent over 1.2 million digital books to children in Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda with Whispercast technology.

“Previously, teachers had been dependent on a small number of outdated textbooks. The e-reader allowed teachers to conduct background research, create lesson notes, and design reading comprehension assessments for students. Since their work was made more efficient and easy, teachers reported having more time to develop the quality of their lessons,” reported a USAID-funded independent evaluation of a Worldreader pilot project. Even more impressively, USAID also found that primary school students in Ghana who received e-readers showed increased performance on standardized test scores. Reading scores of primary school students who received e-readers increased from 12.9% to 15.7%, depending on whether they received any additional reading support. This represented an improvement of 4.8% to 7.6% above scores of students in control classrooms without e-readers.

Worldreader has now sent over 1.2 million digital books to children in Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda with Whispercast technology. “Having a Kindle with all your books on it is like having a library in the palm of your hand that never closes,” says Risher.
